Presentation to the press of the findings of the report “Aspects of the social impact resulting from the construction of a variant of Highway IP5, projected as southern ring road of the city of Viseu.” Study carried out by Dr. Margarida Reis and Dr. Nicole Peixe.

24 April 2001

11 AM: Press conference to announce the delivery of the petition “Right to Life --Against Road Crime in Portugal” in the Assembly of the Republic, and the joint signing by more than 30 associations of the “Common Charter of Civic Associations Promoting Road Safety” to be sent to the government organs, and for the presentation of an Open Letter to the Political Parties for the promotion of road safety. These actions took place in Timor Space across from the Assembly of the Republic.

12 noon: Delivery of the petition “Right to Life: Against Road Crime in Portugal,” signed by approximately 8000 citizens, to the President of the Assembly of the Republic.

Organization, in conjunction with APSI, of a round-table at the Superior Technical Institute entitled “Thinking about Lisbon 2005—Urban Road Safety, about road safety and public transport policy in the Lisbon Metropolitan area. Participants were candidates for Mayor of Lisbon and specialists in transport, planning, economics, environment, road safety etc.

Open letter sent to the President of the Republic and other state entities about the urgency of the question of road safety in Portugal.

Participation in a working session at the General Directorate of Motor Vehicles in order to prepare changes to the Road Code.

Press conference held at the Casa de Imprensa, with APSI and the Users association of the IP4, to announce the launching of the petition “Right to Life—Against Road Crime”, to be sent to the Assembly of the Republic.

15 February 2001

Following the death of Diamantino Viseu, ACA-M paid homage to the thousands of pedestrians run over and killed in Portugal. This was a protest demonstration against the negligence of the authorities and the collective silence surrounding this situation, held at 3:00 PM on February 15 at the corner of Avenida 5 de Outubro and Avenida de Berna in Lisbon, where the ex-bullfighter was run over and killed. The symbolic painting of the missing pedestrian crossing was carried out. Photographs available.

Letter sent to the Assembly of the Republic with a request that the agenda include a minute of silence for the death of thousands of pedestrians in the last 25 years in Portugal.

Participation in the Congress entitled “Highway 2000”, organized by the Portuguese Road Centre, with the presentation of a communiqué entitled, “Lack of Road Safety and the Management of Impunity.” Published in the minutes of the Congress “Highway 2000.”

Organization of a round-table at ISCTE, entitled “Day Without Cars in the City—Balance and Outlook,” with the participation of Fernando Nunes da Silva, José Manuel Viegas, António Fonseca Ferreira, Vitor Matias Ferreira, and other specialists in transport, planning, economics, environment, road safety etc., technical personnel of the Carris (Lisbon bus system), Lisbon Metro, Caminhos de Ferro (railroads), Secretaries of State for the Environment and Internal Administration, representatives of environmental associations, etc. A memorandum was drawn up for distribution to various governmental and private entities and to the mass media.
